Leading Through Legacy: CFB Borden/MPGTG HQ Undergoes Change of Command

Col Michaud leaves imprint on Borden and welcomes Col Ramessar as new Base Commander

In a heartfelt and bittersweet change of command ceremony on 19 June 2024, former Base Commander Colonel Jonathan Michaud said farewell to CFB Borden after nearly two years of service and welcomed Colonel Melissa Ramessar to the position, assuming all responsibilities of Base Commander.

Many honourable guests were present for the ceremony including Brigadier-General Krista Brodie who referenced the many historical legends associated with Borden, commemorating Col Michaud for leaving his own legacy on the Base.

“John, this is not the first time you have left your imprint on the Base and this training group,” BGen Brodie said. “Your hallmark, compassion and conviction even in the most trying of circumstances is an enviable quality of a character leader of the highest order.”

She also praised the incoming Base Commander Col Ramessar for her confidence and gumption in molding the future of the CAF.

“I recall asking [Col Ramessar] why despite all of the challenges that you face, why you choose to stay in the CAF,” BGen Brodie recalled. “Col Ramessar without hesitation and quite wisely, I might say replied: ‘Ma’am, because the organization is better with me in it’. That response has become a mantra for me and for the military personnel generation.”

Col Michaud thanked all in attendance for their support over the years, giving a special thanks to his family for having sacrificed so much.

“Someone once said that if you think being a military member is tough, try loving one,” Col Michaud said. “Over the last two years, Sonya Ian and Luc continued to wear the invisible uniform while I was away from home, supporting me and the military.”

Col Ramessar shared her hopes as CFB Borden’s new Base Commander, striving to spearhead necessary changes in the coming years.

“As we look ahead, it is clear that our mandate remains critical, particularly in this increasingly uncertain and complex strategic environment,” Col Ramessar said. “Our units and our personnel have a crucial role in CAF reconstitution and readiness, enabling the training and production of personnel who are ready and trusted to serve and thrive amongst the chaos.”
