Chaplain’s Corner: Balance

The Fall is a good time for reflection. Often, I get out into Northern Ontario and walk through the forest during crisp mornings and enjoy the colours of the falling leaves. My thoughts usually focus on why I do what I do with a specific focus on the day to day. My decisions, like many of yours, are made in regard to self-preservation or service. We may call this service to others or self-care in Chaplain terms but when you boil it all down, its for others or me personally that I make individual choices. I am learning to do this for a better work life balance. We can easily become focused on ourselves or others, yet there is a great need for balance.  Without a plan, weekly schedule, or battle rhythm, I can easily become distracted either by my own wants, needs, and desires or those of others. It is admirable to care for and serve others, to be there for your family and friends, loved ones, and colleagues. Yet, when do you pump the brakes and take time for yourself? I suggest that you schedule time for you, time at the gym, with your spouse or partner, or your children. Make some things that bring you back, that bring you balance, that refresh and renew your strength, energy and peace. Balance will hopefully become part of your life towards a better you, better relationships, and healthier work performance.

Peace,

Padre Bowyer
