On a brisk winter evening on 5 December 2024, members of the Canadian Forces Base Borden community gathered to celebrate and honor the invaluable contributions of their volunteers during the annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner, hosted by Personnel Support Programs (PSP) and the Borden Family Resource Centre (BFRC) at Poppi’s Italian Eatery.
The event served as a heartfelt tribute to the individuals whose dedication and selflessness are vital to the vibrancy of the base, with welcoming remarks highlighting the importance of volunteers in fostering a strong and connected community.
CANEX Manager, Tom Bennett, expressed gratitude on behalf of the organization for the unwavering commitment of Borden’s volunteers. He announced this year’s CANEX contribution of $4,965 to the CANEX Gives Back: Volunteer Appreciation Program, part of CANEX’s national initiative to give back to military communities across Canada.
“Your expertise and dedication make programs like these possible,” Tom stated. “Your efforts are appreciated not only by the Borden community but also by the broader defense staff.”

The presentation of the cheque was a moment of pride and celebration, underscoring the partnership between CANEX, CFB Borden and the volunteer community.
Lieutenant Colonel Karyne Brown, Commanding Officer of Personnel Support Services (PSS), took the opportunity to praise the extraordinary efforts of the PSP, the BFRC and the many volunteers who ensure the success of events and programs on Base.
Reflecting on her short time at Borden, LCol Brown noted the unparalleled activity level and the profound impact of the volunteers.
“Throughout my career, I would say that Borden is the most active base I’ve been at,” LCol Brown shared. “The smiles, joy, and sense of community you bring are remarkable. Without your support, these events would not be possible or nearly as successful.”
As the evening transitioned into a dinner, guests enjoyed a spread of delicious Italian food, laughter, and camaraderie.

PSP Recreation Coordinator, Heather MacGregor and BFRC Family Navigator, Maude Jean-Workman were two key figures in organizing the event who closed the evening with humor and warmth, ensuring everyone left with full hearts and stomachs.
Volunteers and leaders alike left the dinner feeling appreciated, motivated and eager for another year of making a difference at CFB Borden.
This year’s Volunteer Appreciation Dinner was a testament to the incredible spirit of the Borden community, where generosity and service continue to create a lasting impact. Thank you to all who contribute their time, energy, and passion—you are the heart of our Base.
