CFSATE’s annual hockey game sees money and food donated to Angus Food Bank after staff take home a victory over students in a tense shootout
CFSATE (Canadian Forces School of Aviation Technology and Engineering) students faced off against their staff in a charity hockey game in Andy Anderson Arena on 13 December 2024, where all proceeds went to the Angus Foodbank and the staff team stole the win in a shootout after tying the game in the third period.
Spirits were high in the arena as the intermission show included a “chuck-a-puck” competition where the winner took home two tickets to a Toronto Maple Leafs game, courtesy of Honorary Colonel Wayne Hay.
“The students are out there fighting away with the staff, and everybody really enjoys the morning,” HCol Hay said. “After this, everyone goes over to the mess hall for a festive dinner in which the senior staff always serve the junior ranks.”
HCol Hay takes pride in the event as it always boosts morale and gets members into the holiday spirit. The CFSATE staff versus student hockey game raised over $700 in cash and 70 lbs or about 32 kgs of food donations for the Angus Foodbank.
“We enjoy doing this as a senior rank, but as Honorary Colonels, we enjoy it immensely because we get to involve ourselves with the students just before Christmas. This is the time of year where everyone is trying to give back.”
Although the competition was friendly, both teams were highly competitive and kept the crowd of CFSATE students and instructors cheering on their feet.
Moments after the staff team scored their second shootout goal, the organizers presented the team captain with the 2024 Rhéaume Cup which he held over his head, passing it off to each of his teammates in a high spirits celebration.
The hockey game provided members of all ranks to enjoy a friendly competition that boosted morale and an opportunity to give back to the community in time for the holiday season.
