Chaplain’s Corner: What book changed your life?

This is the last of seven questions that Alan Alda uses to conclude interviews with guests on his podcast, “Clear and Vivid.”

While there is no one book that has changed my life, there are many that have enriched my life. One such book is “Everyday Heroes – Inspirational Stories from Men and Women in the Canadian Armed Forces,” edited by Jody Mitic.

Lt Gen (Ret) Roméo Dallaire is quoted on the book jacket saying, “With the humour, modesty, and kindness to be expected of Canadian servicemen and women, Everyday Heroes enlightens and informs.”

The book’s firsthand accounts of service in the CAF range from World War II to Afghanistan. The stories include experiences of injury, loss, grief and triumph. Themes of service, sacrifice, and pride in service come alive in these memoires, but one common element came through both in the acknowledgements at the end of the book and throughout the personal reflections shared – how grateful CAF members are for their mentors, trainers, leaders, and especially their families.

This book illustrates the value of training, duty, courage and discipline. Equally this book reminded me of the sustaining power that comes from being connected to those whom you love. Many of the acknowledgements at the end of the book spoke of the contributors’ gratitude for parents, spouses, children, siblings and other loved ones.

Being rooted in meaningful relationships is an important source of strength, helping us find purpose in what we are called to do from time to time as CAF members. We draw strength from these relationships, and these relationships are often the light that leads us through challenges and guides us back home. For those who serve, I thank you. For those who support those of us in uniform, know that we value your love and that you can never be thanked enough.

I recommend this book to those who are serving, have served, are thinking of serving, and to all who love someone who has worn the Maple Leaf on their left shoulder.
