LCol Champagne Celebrates Last Hurrah as CO during RCEME Day 2025

On 15 May 2025 at CFB Borden, The Corps of Royal Canadian Electrical and Mechanical Engineers (RCEME) School proudly celebrated RCEME Day with camaraderie, recognition and reflection on the critical role RCEME plays in supporting the Canadian Armed Forces (CAF).

Held annually, RCEME Day serves as an opportunity to honour the Corps’ proud history, showcase its technical talent and strengthen the ‘esprit de corps’ among members. This year’s celebration featured spirited competition, heartfelt recognition of outstanding contributors, and a strong emphasis on education and self-awareness among RCEME members

Commandant’s Challenge Results

The day kicked off with a morning of sports and friendly competition followed by lunch and then the Commandant’s Challenge: a competition designed to test technical skills, problem-solving and teamwork among the various RCEME companies.

Some challenge aspects included a team tire lift exercise, LAV pull, sledgehammer relay race and a singing competition of RCEME’s March songs Lillibulero & Auprès de ma Blonde Coy Comp that had members of all ranks cheering each other on. After a tight contest and enthusiastic support from spectators, the results were announced:

  • 1st Place – Eval Company with 58 points
  • 2nd Place – Regimental Company with 55 points
  • 3rd Place – I.T. Company with 52 points

The competition was not only a showcase of capability but also a display of unity and morale across the Corps. Leaders encouraged all members to continue investing in their RCEME identity, with a special nod to those still learning the history and traditions tied to the RCEME cap badge.

Recognition of Dedication and Innovation

Throughout the ceremony, several individuals were recognized for their exceptional service and behind-the-scenes contributions that keep the RCEME engine running.

  • Mr. Derek Dow was honoured for his years of technical support in RCEME’s digital infrastructure. Often working quietly in the background, Mr. Dow has been instrumental in resolving major technical issues, overseeing equipment lifecycle management, and ensuring seamless IT support across the unit.
  • Warrant Officer Cook received a coin of recognition for his impactful work in modernizing training programs, particularly for reservists. His leadership and commitment were praised for helping develop a more responsive and up-to-date training environment for new technicians.
  • MWO Blanchette was celebrated for spearheading a modernization initiative that successfully secured funding for a simulated learning environment within RCEME’s Second Data Course. His efforts to navigate the complexities of military contracting and advocate for innovation ensured that critical training enhancements were brought to life.

Honouring Apprentices and Families

A touching moment of the day came when RCEME leadership acknowledged the youngest apprentice in Vehicle Company who wielded the unit’s sword to cut cake, symbolizing a bright future for the school.

Throughout the ceremony, there were repeated acknowledgments of family support, emphasizing that the strength of the Corps is rooted not only in technical skill but also in the resilience and encouragement of RCEME families.
