As part of CFB Borden’s Mind‑Body Battle‑Ready campaign, the Health Promotion team delivered an engaging and informative session titled “Promoting Women’s Health: From Information to Action.” Led by Dr. Kristina Lyte and Nurse Practitioner Emma Jibb from the 31 CF Health Service Centre, the seminar focused on helping CAF members better understand available health services, while offering clear, evidence-based insights into a range of women’s health topics.
On May 20, members of the CFB Borden community had the opportunity to take part in a session focused on women’s health, offered both in person at the RCEME Theatre and online.
Covering Health at Every Stage
The presentation touched on a wide range of topics that affect women throughout different stages of life. This included contraception, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), cancer screening, fertility services, pregnancy care and options, as well as perimenopause, menopause, and mental health.
The session also highlighted the importance of knowing what services are available and when to access them. The goal was to help members feel more confident navigating their care and making informed decisions.
Breaking Down Contraceptive Options
A big part of the discussion focused on contraception, with facilitators walking through both short- and long-term options.
Short-term methods included the pill, patch, and vaginal ring, along with newer options like estetrol-based pills, which may come with fewer side effects.
Long-term options were also highlighted, including IUDs and implants. These were described as a “set it and forget it” approach, which can be especially helpful for CAF members with demanding or unpredictable schedules. Attendees also learned that many of these options are covered under the CAF drug plan, with access available through the MIR or other referrals when needed.
Prevention and Screening Matter
The session also reinforced the importance of regular screening. Programs such as cervical, breast, colorectal, and lung screening were discussed as key tools for early detection and long-term health.
Looking at the Bigger Picture
Beyond physical health, there was also discussion around fertility services, hormonal changes, and mental health. Topics like perimenopause and menopause were covered in a practical way, including different treatment routes, from hormonal, non-hormonal, and lifestyle options.
Taking the Next Step
The overall takeaway from the session was simple: having the right information makes it easier to take action. By understanding what’s available and how to access it, members are better equipped to take care of their health, both personally and professionally.
Sessions like this are an important reminder that maintaining health isn’t just about treatment, it’s about staying informed, asking questions, and making use of the support systems in place.
