Acknowledging the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination

On March 21, communities across Canada and around the world observe the International Day for the Elimination of Racial Discrimination. Observed annually on March 21, it commemorates the day police in Sharpeville, South Africa, opened fire and killed 69 people at a peaceful demonstration against apartheid “pass laws” in 1960.

Although important progress has been made, Indigenous peoples and racialized and religious minority communities in Canada continue to face racism and discrimination every day. Whether overt or subtle, individual or systemic, these forms of discrimination impact access to employment, housing, healthcare, education, and a sense of safety and belonging.

The Government of Canada emphasizes that this day is a call to action for individuals, organizations, and all levels of government to actively work towards eliminating racial discrimination, injustice, and systemic racism. It is also a reminder that diversity is one of our greatest strengths, and creating an inclusive environment involves a commitment to continuous learning, listening, and meaningful action.

At CFB Borden and throughout our Defence community, we stand alongside anyone affected by racial discrimination. We remain committed to creating a safe and respectful environment where every person feels valued and supported.
