Honouring a defining moment in Canada’s military history
Each year on 9 April, Canadians take a moment to remember the Battle of Vimy Ridge and honour those who served during it in 1917. Over four days of intense fighting, soldiers of the Canadian Corps came together for the first time as a single, unified force. Their determination and courage led to a hard won victory, but it came at a tremendous cost. More than 3,500 Canadians lost their lives, and thousands more were wounded, which are sacrifices that remain at the heart of how we remember Vimy Ridge today.
The Battle of Vimy Ridge is remembered not only for its military significance, but for what it represented: determination, careful preparation, and collective effort in the face of immense adversity. Soldiers from across Canada advanced together, relying on strong leadership and mutual trust to overcome well entrenched German forces on a position that had withstood previous Allied attacks.

A Lasting Legacy
At Vimy Ridge, regiments from across Canada fought side by side in a distinctly Canadian victory. The success of the Canadian Corps contributed to a growing sense of national identity and increased Canada’s international standing, helping secure a separate signature on the Treaty of Versailles that formally ended the war.
Over a hundred years have passed, yet the impact of Vimy Ridge still echoes through the Canadian Armed Forces. The courage and teamwork displayed by those who served remain core values that guide CAF members today, whether in training, operations, or support roles at home and abroad.
